Every year on the second Saturday in the month of August,
the normally calm and quiet Backwaters of
the Vembanad Lake come alive when teams of over 100 people
from Alleppey and the surrounding
Districts take to their ‘Snake Boats’ and race against each
other for the ultimate prize – the famous
Nehru Trophy.
Competition is fierce and the atmosphere in the crowd becomes electric
as the boats
reach the finishing line.
The best possible way to see this spectacular event is to

History of snake boat race
In the year of 1952, Our first prime minister of India Dr
Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru was visiting
(Travancore) - Cochin. On his way to Alappuzha from Kottayam the locals
of Alleppey escorted by the boats designed like snakes popularly known as
Chundan Vallam, gave him a hearty welcome to the small town of backwaters. The
Prime minister donated a trophy to make an event of snake boat race.Later the
trophy is named "Nehru
trophy"
The first race was conducted in 1952 and Nedubhagam Chundan was the winner of first Nehru trophy. only 10 snake boats was
participated On that occasion. now its
abour 30 Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society organizes the competition every year of
the second Saturday of august. .
There are so many other category country-boats like Iruttukuthy,
Veppu and Churulan vallam also participate in the race;
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race has brought Alappuzha(Alleppey) to be placed in the World
Tourism Map
CHUNDAN VALLAM (SNAKE
BOAT)
The boats are categorized by the name,shape, size and purposes.
The Chundaanvallam is so called because of its pointed prow. The term of snake
boat indicates the shape of the stern which resembles the raised hood of a
snake. The front end of this type of boat will be tapering in shape and the
rear end will be highly elevated from the water level. length measures about 60-65 meters and a capacity to carry
over a hundred people during the race.
The stern is majestically caparisoned and decorated with a flag and brass
ornaments. Silken parasols are arrayed along the entire length of the boat.
There will be 95 oarsman, 5 Controllers and 10 'Nilakkar' to cheer up
rowers with drums and musics and keep up
the enthusiasm of the participating rowers.
These boats were the traditional battle vessels of Kerala.
